3-26-10 Fresh Catholic Church investigations in the northern cities of Bolzano and Verona could expose new cases of predatory clergy in Italy, which counts more than 50,000 priests, the highest concentration in the world. And on Friday, the left-leaning Italian weekly L'Espresso published new allegations of child molestation by a monk in Tuscany and by a nun in the northern region of Lombardy. (full story)

For years, deaf boys tried to tell of abuse - Saturday, March 27, 2010

3-26-10 They were deaf, but they were not silent. For decades, a group of men who were sexually abused as children by the Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy at a school for the deaf in Wisconsin reported to every type of official they could think of that he was a danger, according to the victims and church documents.

Keeping the record straight on Benedict - Saturday, March 27, 2010
3-26-10 The first casualty of any crisis is perspective. There are at least three aspects of Benedict's record on the sexual abuse crisis which are being misconstrued, or at least sloppily characterized, in today's discussion. Bringing clarity to these points is not a matter of excusing the pope, but rather of trying to understand accurately how we got where we are. (full story)

Papal preacher addresses 'serious hardship' - Saturday, March 27, 2010
3-26-10  Father Raniero Cantalamessa addressed the pope specifically and reminded him that God told Jeremiah that before his detractors he would make him "a solid wall of brass. Though they fight against you, they shall not prevail. For I am with you to deliver and rescue you....The media's tenacity -- and we have seen it in other cases -- in the long run will bring about the opposite effect that they had hoped for," he added. 3-26-10 The French bishops have written in a letter to the pope ''those who carried out these acts have disfigured the church, wounded Christian communities and cast suspicion on all the members of the clergy.'' They say they ''all feel shame and regret when faced with the abominable acts carried out by certain priests.'' The bishops also addressed a message of support to the pope, saying the sexual abuse ''is being used in a campaign to attack you personally.'' (full story)

Talk urges closer attention to priests' needs - Friday, March 26, 2010
3-25-10  In an inaugural lecture honoring the late religion sociologist Dean Hoge, Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of Tucson, Ariz., vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said Hoge's recommendations on bringing new vitality to the priesthood bear receiving close attention from the church's leadersDrawing from Hoge's research on the priesthood, particularly about those who are beginning their priestly lives, Bishop Kicanas said that if the newly ordained are to thrive in ministry as Pope Benedict XVI stressed in declaring the Year for Priests, "dioceses need to attend to the amount of work they put on priests and to find ways to assist them in acquiring the skills necessary to feel competent in what they are called to do in parish work." Milwaukee reacts to stories re: Fr. Murphy - Friday, March 26, 2010
3-25-10 Victims and their supporters gathered Thursday morning outside Milwaukee Archdiocese offices, including 61-year-old Arthur Budzinski, who was molested by Murphy beginning at the age of 12 when he was a student at St. John's. Speaking in sign language interpreted by his hearing daughter, Gigi, Budzinski said, "somebody should be punished." "The pope knew about this. He's the one who handled these. He should be accountable." (full story)

Credibility gap: Pope needs to answer questions - Friday, March 26, 2010
3-26-10 The Holy Father needs to directly answer questions, in a credible forum, about his role -- as archbishop of Munich (1977-82), as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (1982-2005), and as pope (2005-present) -- in the mismanagement of the clergy sex abuse crisis. We urge this not primarily as journalists seeking a story, but as Catholics who appreciate that extraordinary circumstances require an extraordinary response. Nothing less than a full, personal and public accounting will begin to address the crisis that is engulfing the worldwide church. It is that serious. (full story)

Pope was told about transfer - Friday, March 26, 2010
3-26-10 Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future pope and archbishop in Munich at the time, was copied on a memo that informed him that a priest, whom he had approved sending to therapy in 1980 to overcome pedophilia, would be returned to pastoral work within days of beginning psychiatric treatment. The priest was later convicted of molesting boys in another parish. (full story)

SNAP's response to NY Times story - Friday, March 26, 2010
3-26-10 The Pope allegedly wants greater transparency in the church on abuse. (He could, of course, mandate openness, instead of just talking about it.) Here’s the place to start: He should make himself, Fr. Peter Hullerman, Vicar General Gerhard Gruber, Fr. Friedrich Fahr, and others with knowledge of this reckless case available for interviews. He should voluntarily turn over all files relating to this situation. That would clear things up considerably. (full story)
