| U.S. victims release more Church records - Wednesday, March 31, 2010 3-31-10 Newly released records, including letters to the Vatican in the 1960s, show a Catholic official admitting a “tremendous problem” of predator priests. The documents prove that almost 50 years ago, top church staff knew how widespread and incorrigible pedophiles are. They severely undercut recent claims by the Pope’s defenders that he and others in the church hierarchy mishandled cases because they were “on a learning curve.” (full story) |

Abuse victims would get a chance to speak out about their experiences during the event, which was co-sponsored by the liberal reform movement We Are Church. (full story) |
| Priest calls news reports inaccurate - Wednesday, March 31, 2010 3-30-10 A priest who was involved in the canonical trial of a priest accused of abusing deaf children decades ago says news reports about Pope Benedict XVI's involvement in the case are based on "sloppy and inaccurate reporting.""I have no reason to believe that (then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) was involved at all" in the case of Father Lawrence Murphy, who served at St. John's School for the Deaf in Milwaukee from 1950 to 1974, said Father Thomas Brundage, who was presiding judge in the 1996-98 trial against Father Murphy on charges of child sexual abuse and solicitation within the confessional. | The 'Holy Office' speaks - Wednesday, March 31, 2010 3-31-10 The point of Goodstein’s [New York Times] article, however, is to attribute the failure to accomplish this dismissal to Pope Benedict, instead of to diocesan decisions at the time. She uses the technique of repeating the many escalating charges and accusations from various sources (not least from her own newspaper), and tries to use these “newly unearthed files” as the basis for accusing the pope of leniency and inaction in this case and presumably in others. | Hundreds of abuse cases reported in Austria - Tuesday, March 30, 2010 3-30-10 There have been 566 reports of various kinds of abuse by clergy at the Catholic Church’s ombudsman’s offices this year, it was reported today (Tues). Cases of sexual abuse constitute 27 per cent of these, cases of violence 26 per cent. More than half of them require further investigation, according to the media. (full story) |
| Schonborn, Ratzinger and Groer - Tuesday, March 30, 2010 3-28-10 Ratzinger made a mistake in his handling of the Hullermann case; from all indications, he wanted to act against other abusers but was limited by John Paul and Sodano. No doubt he feels it a terrible injustice to be criticized for others’ failures. It would be awkward for Benedict to blame others, even if they are to blame. He should set up an independent commission to investigate what really happened and to bring out the truth about who was blocking the investigations of abusers. (full story) |

| 20 priests accused in German diocese - Tuesday, March 30, 2010 3-29-10 A German Roman Catholic diocese said on Monday that 20 of its current and former priests had been accused "in recent weeks" of sexual abuse as a scandal embroiling the Church widened. The Trier bishopric in the west of the country said the "shocking" allegations involved crimes committed from the 1950s to 1990. "For my part, I would like to encourage those victims who have not yet found the courage to come forward to do so," Bishop Stephan Ackermann told reporters, saying he was "stunned" by the cases that had come to light. | Members of Review Board have second thoughts - Tuesday, March 30, 2010 3-30-10 The recent clamor over media revelations about two priests whose abuse cases were adjudicated under Ratzinger's watch have led two of the three members of the U.S. bishops' National Review Board who met with Ratzinger to reconsider their views. "I felt, as did some of the other members, that he would be 'on' this issue," said Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke, a panel member from 2002 through 2005. "So for me to be reading this ... has been very disheartening." (full story) |
| Should the Pope stay? - Tuesday, March 30, 2010 3-30-10 If the pope were to step down, like Cardinal Bernard Law did in Boston, it would create the illusion of reform while decreasing the chances of real reform. It wouldn't unearth volumes of carefully concealed church records that contain names of predator priests and complicit bishops, some or many of whom are still in parishes and chanceries around the globe. It wouldn't strengthen efforts to reform archaic, predator-friendly laws that enable corrupt employers to hire and shield offenders while jeopardizing kids. (full story) |
