| Indian priest in abuse case:'I'm innocent" - Wednesday, April 07, 2010 4-6-10 An Indian priest who is accused of sexually molesting two teenage girls while working in Minnesota from 2004 to 2005 told UCA News, the Asian Catholic news agency, that he is innocent but he would return to the United States to stand trial if called to do so. Father Joseph Palanivel Jeyapaul left Minnesota for a family emergency one year into what was to have been a three-year assignment in the Diocese of Crookston. Shortly after he left, allegations of sexual abuse arose, were investigated by the diocese and his permission to serve in the diocese was revoked. He has never returned. (full story) |
| Vatican blasts anti-Catholic 'hate' campaign - Wednesday, April 07, 2010 4-6-10 The Vatican heatedly defended Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, claiming accusations that he helped cover up the actions of pedophile priests are part of an anti-Catholic "hate" campaign targeting the pope for his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage. Vatican Radio broadcast comments by two senior cardinals explaining "the motive for these attacks" on the pope and the Vatican newspaper chipped in with spirited comments from another top cardinal. | 130 Italian priests investigated: SNAP responds - Wednesday, April 07, 2010 4-6-10 Our hearts ache for these brave, wounded Italian victims, especially because it seems that church officials often have a cozy relationship with secular authorities and are able to keep a lid on these crimes and cover ups. Gradually, however, the courage of victims will overcome these obstacles and make the church, and Italy, safer for children. (full story) |

More than 10,000 pages of depositions, pleadings and documents also show abusive priests were moved quietly from parish to parish and diocese to diocese to avoid scandal and to protect the priests, the plaintiff's attorney said. | Pope invited to gathering of child abuse victims - Wednesday, April 07, 2010 4-7-10 Victims of the Catholic Church child abuse scandal have issued an invitation to Pope Benedict XVI to join them in a 'Day of Reformation' later this year, where the organisers hope the pontiff will be able to meet face to face with the thousands of victims hurt by the massive scandal. The event is being organised by Bernie McDaid and Olan Horne, two victims who met with Pope Benedict during his April 2008 visit to the U.S. and have since pledged to hold the pope’s “feet to the fire” in regards to the crisis. | Ex-Legionaries and incardination - Wednesday, April 07, 2010 4-7-10 The rumors about the order have been around for years–I have to say, I’m skeptical of someone who has been in for twenty-five years and suddenly recognizes there’s a problem with the formation and the structure and the vows of secrecy. So here’s my question: What procedures are these dioceses putting in place to make sure that that the Legionaries who come over are in fact healthy and likely to be productive priests in parishes? Are the procedures for scrutinizing the soundness of priests who come into a diocese “mid-career” as stringent as those imposed on those who enter the seminary within the diocese? (full story) |
| Der Spiegel highly critical of Pope - Wednesday, April 07, 2010 4-6-10 The pain of the clergy sexual abuse has been especially acute in Germany these past two months and with this pain has come some very critical assessments of the handling of the crisis by the Germany born pope, Benedict XVI. None, however, has been as dark as the one published this week in Der Spiegel . (full story) |

Members of the board of the 160-year-old hospital voted to shutter all surgical, rehab and psychiatric inpatient services and divert patients to other hospitals beginning April 14. In the short term, St. Vincent's will likely continue to provide emergency care, the sources said. (full story) |
| Money paved the way for Maciel - Wednesday, April 07, 2010 4-6-10 The saga of the disgraced founder of the Legion of Christ, a secretive, cult-like religious order now under Vatican investigation, opens into a deeper story of how one man's lies and betrayal dazzled key figures in the Roman curia and how Maciel's money and success helped him find protection and influence. For years, the heads of Vatican congregations and the pope himself ignored persistent warnings that something was rotten in the community where Legionaries called their leader Nuestro Padre , "Our Father," and considered him a living saint.
