| Netherlands: Nuns also abused children - Sunday, April 25, 2010 4-24-10 Since NRC Handelsblad and RNW started publishing testimonies from victims of abuse within the Catholic Church, 29 women have come forward. Ten women reported being abused by male priests, while 19 women said they were the victim of clerics of their own sex. Of all the reports of maltreatment by nuns, some 40 percent concern child abuse. | Pope to launch new council for evangelization - Sunday, April 25, 2010 4-25-10 According to a report from a well-connected Italian Vatican writer, Pope Benedict XVI will shortly announce the creation of a “Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization,” to be presided over by Italian Archbishop Rino Fisichella. | Justice Anne Burke calls for tougher action - Saturday, April 24, 2010 4-23-10 Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke says Pope Benedict should force any bishop to resign if he has ever transferred child molester priests to other parishes or dioceses. Burke says she met in the Vatican with the pope in 2004, when he was still Josef Cardinal Ratzinger. She says they and others talked for two-and-a-half hours about the priest sex abuse scandal and the need for transparency. (full story) |
| Calif. bishop refuses Review Board recommendation - Saturday, April 24, 2010 4-23-10 The seven-member Diocesan Review Board spent two years investigating abuse charges by Erin Brady, now 51, against Monsignor Joseph Alzugaray, pastor of St. Apollinaris Church in Napa. In October, the board recommended to the Bishop Walsh that Alzugaray be removed from ministry, according to Brady and diocesan sources. But in January, Walsh notified the review board that he had decided against their recommendation and would keep Alzugaray in active ministry at St. Apollinaris, where he continues to serve. | Leaders in Chile meet over scandal - Saturday, April 24, 2010 4-24-10 Monsignor Goic and the Archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Francisco Errazuriz, met President Sebastian Pinera for more than an hour. In five of the cases in Chile, sentences were imposed. In another five, trials are under way and, in the remaining 10, the priests have been absolved or results are pending. In one of the cases, four men accused a senior priest in Santiago, now aged 80, of sexually abusing them for years. (full story) |

| Abuse by bishop reported years ago - Saturday, April 24, 2010 4-24-10 Two former priests say they told church authorities years ago about allegations that Belgium's longest-serving bishop abused a boy but were stonewalled until he was forced to resign Friday. Norbert Bethune, who was dismissed after a doctrinal conflict with superiors, and retired priest Rik Devillle told Belgian media that they reported the allegations to Godfried Danneels, then archbishop. Bethune said he reported the allegations seven years ago. Deville said he learned of the charges from a confidant of the victim's family and reported them 15 years ago. (full story) |
| Fired Iowa teacher wins suit - Saturday, April 24, 2010 4-23-10 A Black Hawk County jury has awarded more than $600,000 to a teacher who was fired in 2007 from Columbus Catholic High School in Waterloo. Tom Girsch filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Cedar Valley Catholic Schools and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dubuque. His termination stemmed from his 2006 remarriage without having his first marriage annulled by the church. (full story) |
| Castrillon bucked US bishop on abuse - Friday, April 23, 2010 4-22-10 Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos pressured Bishop Manuel Moreno, who was bishop of Tucson, Ariz., from 1982-2003, to allow a priest sex abuser to take a pension and work outside the diocese, despite allegations that would later jolt the diocese and cost millions to resolve. Fr Robert Trupia "sexually abused dozens of minor boys" before he was defrocked in 2004, according to documents in the civil case. The litigation surrounding the case opens a rare window on the operation of the Vatican legal system. (full story) |
| Bishops ask Catholics to do acts of penance - Friday, April 23, 2010 4-22-10 The bishops of England and Wales are asking Catholics to carry out acts of penance each Friday in May to help atone for clerical abuse crimes. Is someone making this up? Did you ever go to confession and say these words? "Bless me father for I have sinned. ... For my penance I want you to say three Our Fathers and three Hail Marys!
