5-8-10 The head of the Austrian Church has launched an attack of one of the most senior cardinals in the Vatican, saying that Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, “deeply wronged” the victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy when he dismissed media reports of the scandal. In a meeting with editors of the main Austrian daily newspapers last week, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, also said the Roman Curia was “urgently in need of reform”, and that lasting gay relationships deserved respect. He reiterated his view that the Church needs to reconsider its position on re-married divorcees. (full story)

Some European dioceses take the lead - Friday, May 07, 2010
5-7-10 In Germany, Austria and elsewhere, dioceses say they have begun poring through decades of archives to see how old abuse allegations were handled, or mishandled. In many cases, in an effort to convey their seriousness and openness in addressing a wave of allegations against priests and other church officials, these dioceses have banded together and named investigatory teams run by nonpriests. 5-6-10  The existence of the Regnum Christi consecrated women had not been recognized by the Holy See. The faithful have been living in a sort of "voluntary slavery" that prevents them from expressing opinions, having friendships and connections with their family. Currently this "Female Army” founded by Maciel is composed of about 900 women of various nationalities mostly from Mexico, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Germany and New Zealand. (full story)

5-7-10 ....Price confronted the priest who had molested him. His voice sometimes quivering, Price told Yurgel he’d stolen his faith and childhood and robbed him of his ability to trust. “To this day I suffer with horrible flashbacks and nightmares…,” Price said. “You are a liar, a thief of childhoods and a child molester.” Yurgel did not look at the victim or his parents. Nor did he apologize. His lawyer, George Laughrun, spoke for him: “He crossed the line. He knows better…He knows he has sinned.” (full story)

A challenge to old reformers - Friday, May 07, 2010
5-6-10 These reformers spend a lot of time and energy worrying, analyzing, writing about, and arguing with the institutional church. I believe they would do well to take some of the energy behind their righteous anger, and engage those who are struggling to find meaning and spiritual development in a rootless world. Together we need to explore the ways in which we are already church, and to enhance the opportunities to become more fully church.... Younger generations need this support to help them find roots. 5-6-10 As many as 300 American priests claim innocence and are waiting for the Vatican to restore them to duty, according to Fr. Michael Sullivan, a Minnesota priest and member of Justice for Priests and Deacons, an independent group of canon lawyers who defend Catholic clergy. Among such priests,  Fr. James Selvaraj is fortunate. Former parishioners have stood by him, raising $70,000 to pay living expenses and legal fees, offering him places to stay, and inviting him to perform occasional private Masses. The diocese pays his health and car insurance, Selvaraj says. (full story)

5-5-10 Victims of a Florence priest who was defrocked for sexually and psychologically abusing his young parishioners are now demanding that his bishops be held responsible for keeping his crimes quiet.
