UK suit about to end - Sunday, May 09, 2010 5-9-10 One of the longest-running legal cases in UK history, centred on systemic sexual abuse at children's homes in the north-west of England, is poised to end after a judge found in favour of two men who claimed they had been sexually assaulted while in care. A judgment handed down in the high court on Friday determined that the men had been abused while in the care of the Nugent Care Society, formerly Catholic Social Services, in Liverpool. It also cast doubt on the testimony by two former staff members at the homes who had denied the men's claims. (full story)

German church hit by fresh allegations - Sunday, May 09, 2010 5-9-10 The German Catholic diocese of Wuerzburg has sent two priests on leave following allegations of the sexual abuse of children, church officials said Sunday. "The diocese is taking the allegations seriously and will do everything towards a rapid inquiry," vicar-general Karl Hillenbrand said in a statement. The allegations come one day after Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of embattled bishop Walter Mixa, who is also embroiled in controversy over allegations of abuse. (full story)
Symbols separate women religious, clergy - Sunday, May 09, 2010 5-8-10 The mass symbolized – in a meeting that emphasizes symbols -- the growing gulf between Vatican prelates and women religious who increasingly feel the pains of discrimination based on gender. During his homily, Augustinian Father Eusebio Hernàndez Sola thanked the women for their apostolic work, then went on to speak about “the persecution” the church faces today. He referred to sex abuse scandal that has rocked the church hierarchy. Some women, however, said they found his inclusive references to persecution, at least as it pertained to this abuse crisis, confusing. (full story)
Man has picketed nunciature for 12 years - Saturday, May 08, 2010 5-7-10 Since 1998, John Wojnowski, 67, has ceaselessly picketed the Apostolic Nunciature on Washington D.C.'s posh Embassy Row. Wojnowski says he was molested in 1958 at age 15 by an Italian priest, and repressed the memory until 1997, when it was triggered by the suicide of a young clergy abuse victim in Texas. Not long after, he launched his one-man crusade for a proper apology and "reparations" from the Church. (full story)

CALL7 Investigator John Ferrugia uncovered that Thompson was pastor the early 1990s when he was accused of making an inappropriate sexual advance to a college student in the rectory at Fatima. Police say McDonnell also pocketed more than $8,000 in donations and payments intended for the Bucks County Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, where he worked until recently. (full story) |
Anger at the Church - Saturday, May 08, 2010 5-8-10 There is a distinctly different level of anger from the public directed toward the Catholic Church over the sexual abuse of minors than toward other organizations whose leaders commit similar crimes, noted two psychologists who work in the field. "Any violation of children is a terrible thing but when it comes at the hands of those society puts on the highest pedestal, it's also a hypocrisy issue." (full story)
