Below are two announcements about the conference (one shorter, one longer). Please take just a few seconds to forward either or both to:
– any blogger and/or reporter you know, and ask him/her to post it/write about it/blog about it, and
– any support groups or self help groups or recovery groups you know (no matter what addictions they may deal with, because, as you know, many survivors have similar experiences and problems)

UK suit about to end - Sunday, May 09, 2010
5-9-10 One of the longest-running legal cases in UK history, centred on systemic sexual abuse at children's homes in the north-west of England, is poised to end after a judge found in favour of two men who claimed they had been sexually assaulted while in care. A judgment handed down in the high court on Friday determined that the men had been abused while in the care of the Nugent Care Society, formerly Catholic Social Services, in Liverpool. It also cast doubt on the testimony by two former staff members at the homes who had denied the men's claims. (full story)

German church hit by fresh allegations - Sunday, May 09, 2010
5-9-10 The German Catholic diocese of Wuerzburg has sent two priests on leave following allegations of the sexual abuse of children, church officials said Sunday. "The diocese is taking the allegations seriously and will do everything towards a rapid inquiry," vicar-general Karl Hillenbrand said in a statement. The allegations come one day after Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of embattled bishop Walter Mixa, who is also embroiled in controversy over allegations of abuse. (full story)

Symbols separate women religious, clergy - Sunday, May 09, 2010
5-8-10 The mass symbolized – in a meeting that emphasizes symbols -- the growing gulf between Vatican prelates and women religious who increasingly feel the pains of discrimination based on gender. During his homily, Augustinian Father Eusebio Hernàndez Sola thanked the women for their apostolic work, then went on to speak about “the persecution” the church faces today. He referred to sex abuse scandal that has rocked the church hierarchy. Some women, however, said they found his inclusive references to persecution, at least as it pertained to this abuse crisis, confusing. (full story)

Man has picketed nunciature for 12 years - Saturday, May 08, 2010
5-7-10   Since 1998, John Wojnowski, 67, has ceaselessly picketed the Apostolic Nunciature on Washington D.C.'s posh Embassy Row. Wojnowski says he was molested in 1958 at age 15 by an Italian priest, and repressed the memory until 1997, when it was triggered by the suicide of a young clergy abuse victim in Texas. Not long after, he launched his one-man crusade for a proper apology and "reparations" from the Church. (full story)

Removed Denver priest had other allegation - Saturday, May 08, 2010
5-8-10 Father Mel Thompson was posted at several parishes in Colorado, including Our Lady of Fatima in Lakewood, but he was relieved from active ministry in April after a complaint of sexual misconduct with a minor, archdioceses officials said. CALL7 Investigator John Ferrugia uncovered that Thompson was pastor the early 1990s when he was accused of making an inappropriate sexual advance to a college student in the rectory at Fatima. Abuse victim charged with fraud - Saturday, May 08, 2010
5-8-10 Michael W. McDonnell went to only one of the 662 "therapy visits" he had claimed since June 2007, police say, and submitted phony receipts for the rest. The 41-year-old Bristol man was arrested Friday on felony charges including theft and forgery. Police say McDonnell also pocketed more than $8,000 in donations and payments intended for the Bucks County Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, where he worked until recently. (full story)

Anger at the Church - Saturday, May 08, 2010
5-8-10 There is a distinctly different level of anger from the public directed toward the Catholic Church over the sexual abuse of minors than toward other organizations whose leaders commit similar crimes, noted two psychologists who work in the field.  "Any violation of children is a terrible thing but when it comes at the hands of those society puts on the highest pedestal, it's also a hypocrisy issue." Asked about possibly being appointed apostolic commissioner for the troubled order, the prelate said he would prefer not to have the post, but would accept if asked by the Holy Father. (full story)

Poll shows 'dramatic' loss of confidence - Saturday, May 08, 2010
5-7-10 Catholics' approval ratings of Pope Benedict XVI's job performance while in office dropped 15 points over the past two years, according to a new poll conducted by Zogby Interactive. The numbers slid from 71 percent in April 2008, as the pope made his first pastoral visit to the United States as pontiff, to 56 percent in April 2010. Approval ratings for the U.S. Catholic bishops fell even more than that of the pope, from 62 percent in 2008 to 45 percent in 2010. (full story)
