| No time for world's women religious leaders - Tuesday, May 11, 2010 5-11-10 The Holy Father today, (Monday, May 10), according to the Vatican Press Office, received in separate audiences: two prelates from the Episcopal Conference of Belgium, Bishop Lucas Van Looy of Ghent, and Msgr. Koen Vanhoutte, the diocesan administrator of Bruges. He also received Italian Bishop Valentino Di Cerbo of Alife-Caiazzo, accompanied by members of his family. Nothing unusual – except for a mention of who he did not receive in audience. Who the Holy Father did not receive in audience was any (or all) of the 800 general superiors of international women religious orders who are in Rome from all corners of the globe for a once in three-year general assembly. | Pope says sex abuse crisis 'terrifying' - Tuesday, May 11, 2010 5-11-10 "In terms of what we today can discover in this message, attacks against the pope or the church don’t come just from outside the church. The suffering of the church also comes from within the church, because sin exists in the church. This too has always been known, but today we see it in a really terrifying way. The greatest persecution of the church doesn’t come from enemies on the outside, but is born in sin within the church. The church thus has a deep need to re-learn penance, to accept purification, to learn on one hand forgiveness but also the necessity of justice. Forgiveness does not exclude justice." (full story) |
| Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin - Tuesday, May 11, 2010 5-11-10 "There are still strong forces which would prefer that the truth did not emerge. The truth will make us free, even when that truth is uncomfortable. There are signs of subconscious denial on the part of many about the extent of the abuse which occurred within the Church of Jesus Christ in Ireland and how it was covered up. There are other signs of rejection of a sense of responsibility for what had happened. There are worrying signs that despite solid regulations and norms these are not being followed with the rigour required...." (full story) |

| Examining the crisis - Monday, May 10, 2010 5-10-10 What if members of the hierarchy got out of their chanceries and spent time every month in the kitchens of survivors and their families, listening abundantly to their stories and apologizing to these people of God? What if they visited the families of every victim in their diocese who committed suicide and with every victim who is in jail or rehab -- and apologized on behalf of themselves and for all Catholics? What if they visited with judges, plaintiffs’ attorneys, attorneys general, district attorneys and grand jurors, listening with fullness to the perspectives of those who have seen sexual abuse within the church from other angles? | Settlement reached against Newark archdiocese - Monday, May 10, 2010 5-10-10 An out-of-court settlement has been reached between a woman assaulted by a priest and the church officials whom she accused of failing to protect her. The woman, who was identified in court documents only as Jane Doe, alleged that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark (NJ) knew about the “dangerous sexual improprieties with women” of the Rev. Wladyslaw Gorak, a priest who was transferred from New Jersey to Florida. As part of the transfer process, Newark’s vicar general, Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli, signed a letter attesting to Father Gorak’s “good moral character” and lack of any criminal record or behavioral problems. There had been complaints against Gorak in New Jersey, however. | Dolan lays out plan to save schools - Monday, May 10, 2010 5-9-10 The question is not whether we're going to have to close some schools, the question is how. We can't do it from the top down. We have got to collaborate with our stakeholders - our parents, our pastors, our principals, our parishioners, our civic leaders, our benefactors and our business leaders. Ultimately, we need more paying customers. Principals always say to me, "Archbishop, if I had two dozen more kids, we wouldn't be in the urgent situation we're in now." (full story) |

Wim Deetman, tasked to probe reports of sexual abuse by priests, said an independent inquiry should assess the scale and nature of the alleged abuse over the last 65 years, examine who was accountable and establish measures to prevent it recurring. | Catholics debate defrocking priests - Sunday, May 09, 2010 5-8-10 Church officials, experts in abuse prevention and even some victims' advocates question whether the time-consuming church process known as laicization, often called defrocking, is the right benchmark in abuse cases. To defrock or not? The question is complicated by the reality that most abuse allegations date back decades and cannot be prosecuted criminally, leaving decisions about how to deal with abusers largely in the hands of church authorities.
