| Vatican, courts wrestle over who controls bishops - Saturday, May 22, 2010 5-21-10 The Vatican argues that bishops are not agents of the pope. In a motion to dismiss a federal lawsuit in Kentucky on Monday, May 17, Vatican lawyer Jeffrey Lena pointed out, among other distinctions, that bishops do not receive their salaries from Rome, nor work on Vatican property. An advocate for American abuse victims called the Vatican's claims "disingenuous." "The church isn't some loosely-knit hippie commune with diffuse authority," said Barbara Dorris, outreach director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. "It's an ancient, rigid, crystal-clear hierarchy in which bishops ordain, transfer and supervise priests and in which the pope selects, transfers and supervises bishops." (full story) |
| Who should pay for the Pope's UK visit? - Friday, May 21, 2010 5-21-10 The total bill for the invited visit - without the cost of police and security - is estimated by the Foreign Office to be about £15m. Of this, £7m will come from the Catholic Church, the rest will be shouldered by taxpayers. It is this final issue of whether, in a secular democracy, the public purse should pay for the visit of a religious leader, that has led to criticism. (full story) |
| Number of deacons increases - Friday, May 21, 2010 5-18-10 The number of U.S. priests has plummeted from 59,000 in 1975 to 40,600 last year. Meanwhile, the country’s Catholic population has grown to 65 million, leaving thousands of parishes without a resident priest. At the same time, permanent deacons in the U.S. have swelled from seven in 1971 to an estimated 17,000 in 2010. Worldwide, the permanent diaconate has expanded roughly 30 times faster than the priesthood since 2000, according to the Vatican, with much of the growth attributed to the United States. | Australian priests banned but continue ministry - Friday, May 21, 2010 5-17-10 Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, urged tougher action against pedophile priests after the church confirmed Monday two Irish priests accused of molesting girls continued performing church-related duties in Australia's two largest cities despite being barred from doing so. Neither priest has been charged by police. Both were banned by the church from performing any clerical duties. Pell said Monday any priests guilty of abuse should not perform church-related duties. | Tom Doyle's spiritual journey - Friday, May 21, 2010 5-20-10 I was and still am left with figuring out where the reality of the Church, religious life and ultimately Jesus Christ fit into a life that has this spirituality as its core. I have tried really listening to others, meditating and reading. All three have been much more helpful than blindly accepting various and sundry ecclesiastically-based pronouncements, dogmas etc. (full story) |
| First time an Italian bishop was called to testify - Friday, May 21, 2010 5-20-10 An Italian bishop testified Thursday in the trial of a priest accused of molesting boys that he heard rumors of abuse two years before the priest was arrested but didn't find them credible enough to warrant removing him or informing the Vatican. Monsignor Gino Reali's testimony marked the first time an Italian bishop has been called to take the stand in a trial of an Italian priest accused of abusing youngsters, said attorney Nino Marazzita, who is representing two of the seven alleged victims in the civil portion of the case. | Forgive not - Friday, May 21, 2010 5-18-10 Since the papacy has been frozen in a defensive crouch, defying historical fact and free inquiry, it has been opposed to anything that might diminish the power of the Church to define reality. The authority of the bishop, of the priest, of the papacy, was more important than the Gospel. It was considered the only power that could say what the Gospel is or demands. Thus, the covering-up of sacerdotal sins and errors was a given in the Church. (full story) |
| Cracks in the wall of the curia - Friday, May 21, 2010 5-20-10 The Roman Curia is the Vatican bureaucracy. Most people know little about the men who run the curia. But press coverage of the clergy abuse crisis is closing in on cardinals whose blunders in the clergy abuse crisis have begun to draw criticism from other Princes of the Church. As words fire back and forth in the press, the wall of secrecy that traditionally surrounds the curia is showing cracks. (full story) |
| Girls as well as boys have been traumatized - Friday, May 21, 2010 5-20-10 In contrast to the low estimate of victimized females by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, a random survey of over 7,000 active Catholics in the U.S. and Canada found a closer ratio, that 1.7 percent of the females and 3.3 percent of the males had been sexually abused in childhood by a priest. In any case, a significant number of girls have been victimized by priests. Such sexual relationships with female parishioners reinforce a traditional male power dynamic. (full story) |

| Porn investigation at Catholic day care - Thursday, May 20, 2010 5-20-10 St. Louis County police said Wednesday they are still investigating who might have used a computer at a Catholic child care center here to view child pornography. Officials confiscated the computer April 23 from the Simon Says Early Childhood Center, at 11019 Mueller Road. Police spokesman Rick Eckhard said nobody is in custody and no warrants have been issued. The archdiocese sent a memo to parents that said the computer was not part of the day-to-day operations and there was no reason to believe any child's safety was compromised. (full story) |
| Three responses to the scandal - Thursday, May 20, 2010 5-20-10 The Catholic hierarchy is responding in three ways to the scandal of sexual abuse committed by priests. The first is at the initiative of the pope. The second through the work of a few cardinals. The third, thanks to the scholarly Jesuits of "La Civiltà Cattolica," with the imprimatur of the Vatican secretariat of state. (full story) |
