| Safety of women in Catholic hospitals - Tuesday, May 25, 2010 5-23-10 A leading bioethicist, Dr. Jacob M. Appel noted, "Like many Catholic hospitals, St. Joseph's has long had two conflicting policies regarding maternal-fetal conflict on its books. One directive states that abortion is never permitted, even to save the life of the mother, while the other notes that ‘operations, treatments and medications that have as their direct purpose the cure of a proportionately serious pathological condition of a pregnant woman are permitted...even if they will result in the death of the unborn child.’ "Until this recent incident, pregnant women could safely assume that Catholic hospitals would follow both the law and widespread standards of medical ethics in allowing the second directive to trump the first. Suddenly, that time-honored understanding appears to be in jeopardy," he wrote. (full story) |

| Adrian nuns under Vatican scrutiny - Monday, May 24, 2010 5-23-10 For five days this spring, a Vatican-backed team studied the Adrian Dominicans at their motherhouse in Lenawee County. They are among at least 19 sister congregations being investigated under a process called the Apostolic Visitation. While church officials have said the study is necessary to account for the shrinking number of American nuns, the Rev. Thomas Reese, a Jesuit priest at Georgetown University's Woodstock Theological Center, called it a "disastrous PR move by the Vatican." (full story) |

| Australian archbishop sees no quick fix - Sunday, May 23, 2010 5-23-10 Archbishop Coleridge told Radio National, "In the case of clerical abuse of the young, we are dealing with crime. And the Church has struggled to find the point of convergence between sin and forgiveness on the one hand, and crime and punishment on the other. True sin must be forgiven, but so too must crime be punished. What's clear is there will be no quick fix to this problem, the roots of which go deep and wide, we're in for the long haul." | Anglican bishops discuss challenges - Saturday, May 22, 2010 5-21-10 Three bishops from the Church of England traveled to Rome to discuss coming into full communion with the Catholic Church. “Many Anglicans think they will continue to be Anglicans in the Catholic Church and the constitution is absolutely clear, that is not the case. In f act, even though groups of former Anglicans will be able to retain many of their practices, they’ll be considered Catholic by name." Just how many groups are seeking communion is unknown. But according to published reports, at least 100 parishes in the U.S., 20 in the UK and 16 in Australia have decided to join the Catholic Church. (full story) |
| A 'real test for Pope Benedict' - Saturday, May 22, 2010 5-21-10 Bishop Reali must be severely disciplined by secular and religious authorities. He admits, under oath, that he broke two key rules. First, he violated Italian law by refusing to call police about credible child sex abuse allegations. Then, he violated church rules by refusing to notify the CDF of the same allegations. This will be a real test for Pope Benedict – how he responds to such recent and reckless and deceitful misconduct by a bishop right under his nose. (full story) |

Some of those donations allegedly did not make it to the charitable end for which they were intended. According to a civil lawsuit pending in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, a former executive director of the organization's fund-raising arm has "misappropriated significant sums of money" from the congregation for personal expenses, and now a self-insurance fund that covers the Priests of the Sacred Heart's losses wants the money back.
