| Philippine parishioners protest reinstatement - Wednesday, June 02, 2010 6-2-10 Placard-carrying parishioners gathered inside the St. Mary the Comforter Parish in Maricaban, Pasay City on Wednesday morning to protest the reinstatement of their former parish priest who, according to them, had been involved in "anomalous activities." The residents tried to prevent the outgoing priest Fr. David Colong from leaving as they blocked the church's gate while chanting “No to Father Al!” and “Fr. Dave stay!” “We want Fr. Dave or any other priests, but not Fr. Alfonso Valeza,” Luz Cabanatan, a 60-year-old active parishioner said. (full story) |

| New USCCB survey on permanent deacons - Wednesday, June 02, 2010 5-28-10 A national survey of permanent diaconate offices in Catholic dioceses in the United States found that one-quarter of active permanent deacons (28 percent) have a graduate degree. Given that the diaconate is a ministry of service and charity, the vast majority of deacons are not paid for their ministry. Even still, their number continues to rise and they stay active for a very long time. The study, which was commissioned by the Secretariat of Clergy and Consecrated Life and Vocations of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, was conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University. | Recruitment of foreign priests - Wednesday, June 02, 2010 5-30-10 Foreign-born priests have long filled U.S. pulpits. But recent changes in requirements for religious visas are making that harder to do, say some church leaders. Now, citing increased costs and difficulty obtaining visas, some will no longer actively recruit clerics from other countries. (full story) |
| Prospective priests face sexuality hurdles - Tuesday, June 01, 2010 5-30-10 It is part of a soul-baring obstacle course prospective seminarians are forced to run in the aftermath of a sexual abuse crisis that church leaders have decided to confront, in part, by scrubbing their academies of potential molesters, according to church officials and psychologists who screen candidates in New York and the rest of the country. | The cost of 30 million Americans leaving - Tuesday, June 01, 2010 6-1-10 I’m no sociologist or theologian. Nor am I a financial analyst. But a few back of the envelope financial calculations might be instructive. Suppose the 30 million who have left have an average yearly salary of $40,000. Suppose further that each gave 2% of their salary to the church. That’s 30 million times 40,000 times .02. The product of these numbers is 24,000,000,000—that’s 24 Billion dollars of lost revenue per year. (full story) |
| The celibacy conundrum - Tuesday, June 01, 2010 6-1-10 Were the Vatican to lift the ban on married priests, of what of its teaching on birth control? It is one thing for the leadership of the Church of England, say, to have to pay for a vicar with a wife and perhaps two or three children. It is quite another when the minister in question has a wife and five or six children. Would married Roman Catholic priests have so many offspring? If they didn't, I rather suspect their bishops would be keen to know why not. (full story) |
| Re-ordained Cutie soon to be a dad - Tuesday, June 01, 2010 6-1-10 A year after leaving the Catholic Church, celebrity priest Alberto Cutié has become an Episcopal priest and is soon to be a father in another new way. On Saturday, after dusting off the same white stole he wore when he knelt before Miami's Catholic Archbishop 15 years ago to be ordained, he put it back over his shoulders. Padre Alberto is a priest again, this time in the Episcopal church, the Miami Herald reports. It's not the only change in his life. In six months, the padre will be a dad. | Vatican bank under scrutiny - Tuesday, June 01, 2010 6-1-10 Italian prosecutors are investigating the Vatican bank on suspicion of involvement in money laundering, La Repubblica daily reported on Tuesday. The newspaper said the Institute of Religious Works (IOR) and 10 Italian banks, including major institutions such as Intesa San Saolo and Unicredit, were the target of the investigation. 'The hypothesis of the investigators is that subjects with their fiscal residence in Italy are using the IOR as a 'screen' to hide different dealings, such as fraud or tax evasion,' the paper said. The IOR manages bank accounts for religious orders and Catholic associations and benefits from Vatican offshore status. (full story) |
