Pope says devil behind timing of crisis - Friday, June 11, 2010 6-11-10 It’s no accident, the pope implied, that precisely as the Catholic church was celebrating a “Year for Priests” in 2009-2010, the sexual abuse crisis once again took on massive global proportions. “It was to be expected that this new radiance of the priesthood would not be pleasing to the ‘enemy,’” Benedict XVI said. “He would have rather preferred to see it disappear, so that God would ultimately be driven out of the world.” (full story)
Pope defends celibacy - Friday, June 11, 2010 6-10-10 Benedict offered an “eschatological” argument: That a priest is drawn into the life of Christ, including Christ’s condition after the resurrection, so celibacy is an “anticipation of this new world ... in which we are beyond matrimony.” Through the priestly life of celibacy, Benedict argued, “the future breaks into today.” Celibacy seems difficult to understand, Benedict argued, in “an agnostic world in which God doesn’t enter the picture,” in which “we no longer think of a future with God, because the present of this world seems sufficient.” (full story)
SNAP responds to Pope's address - Friday, June 11, 2010 6-11-10 No bishop has ever been fired, defrocked, excommunicated or even publicly excoriated by the Vatican for ignoring or hiding dozens or even hundreds of predator priests. In history, fewer than ten bishops have resigned because they’ve ignored or concealed child sex crimes. So the root cause of this horrific and on-going clergy sex abuse and cover up crisis remains the nearly limitless power of bishops. (full story)
Trust in clergy lower - Friday, June 11, 2010 6-11-10 Following the abuse scandals in the Catholic church, which received international attention, the clergy's image has deteriorated markedly in almost all countries. Just 58% of the (global) population in total have confidence in the group, which is 8% less than in the prior year. (full story)

Canadian victims receive settlements - Thursday, June 10, 2010 6-10-10 Some victims of the Cornwall sex abuse scandal are receiving large financial settlements after decades of allegations that a cover-up of a pedophile ring existed in the eastern Ontario city. The sex abuse scandal was uncovered in the early 1990s. A public inquiry ended in December 2009 after four years. The inquiry found the Catholic Church, police, the Ontario government and the legal system all failed to protect children from sexual predators. (full story)
Trading cards to promote vocations - Thursday, June 10, 2010 6-9-10 "I'll trade you one archbishop for two priests." That's how Melia Vankat suspects a conversation will go between children collecting St. John Vianney priesthood cards, a project Vankat and three other home-schooling moms in Omaha are developing to honor and promote the priesthood. The cards feature photos and statistics of priests serving in the Archdiocese of Omaha. (full story)
Bertone says pain will lead to 'spiritual renewal' - Thursday, June 10, 2010 6-10-10 In front of four thousand priests, the Vatican's second highest authority, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, said cases of sexual abuse undermine the Church's credibility. But he also said that the pain caused by this will bring a “spiritual renewal”. It was during a gathering of priests from all over the world organized by the Focolare and Schönstatt Movement, for the ending of the Year for Priests. (full story)
Pope should read SNAP letter - Thursday, June 10, 2010 6-10-10 No matter how deeply one might disagree with a tactic employed here or there, the fact remains that no group has been more conversant with the scandal, its effects and its causes than those actually abused by priests. So we hope that somehow Pope Benedict gets to actually read a direct, clear and comprehensive letter written to the pope by SNAP leaders. (full story)
