| Springfield will publish list of priests - Tuesday, June 15, 2010 6-14-10 It's something sexual abuse survivors have been advocating for a long time, a published list of every priest in the Pioneer Valley credibly accused of abuse. Monday, an announcement from the Springfield Diocese saying that list will happen, and as soon as next week. Peter Pollard, SNAP, says: "We believe the diocese did not include Albert Blanchard in the John Jay report, and it raises the question again of whether files have been destroyed." (full story) |
| Irish Church pays to settle abuse case - Tuesday, June 15, 2010 6-15-10 The Catholic Church has reached an out-of-court settlement, said to be worth more than €250,000, with a woman who was abused as a child by Fr Brendan Smyth, it was reported last night. Marie McCormack sued the Catholic primate Cardinal Seán Brady, in his personal and official capacities, the diocese of Kilmore and the Norbertine Order to which Smyth belonged. (full story) |
| Church won't appeal release of Mahony's deposition - Tuesday, June 15, 2010 6-14-10 The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles will not appeal plans to release depositions by Cardinal Roger Mahony and other church officials regarding clergy abuse cases later this week. Some of the transcripts are from a sexual abuse lawsuit involving defrocked priest Michael Baker. The 61-year-old Baker pleaded guilty in 2007 to molesting two boys and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He has been accused of molesting nearly 20 children over more than two decades. Mahony has previously acknowledged making mistakes in how he handled Baker. (full story) |

| Cardinal Brady 'aware' of negative poll - Tuesday, June 15, 2010 6-14-10 Cardinal Seán Brady has said he is aware of this morning's opinion poll finding that three out of four adults in the Republic think he should resign. But the Catholic Primate of All Ireland also expressed confidence that he had the prayers and support of many people as he continued his work in renewing faith and structures in the Church at what he termed 'this challenging time'. | Groups urge Catholics to re-direct donations - Monday, June 14, 2010 6-14-10 The grassroots group Send the Bishops a Message urges all United States Catholics to prayerfully and thoughtfully consider re-directing the donations that they would ordinarily earmark for the Peter’s Pence collection on Sunday June 27 to a non-church charity of their choice. For those who would like to donate to non-profit organizations that provide direct help to survivors of clergy sexual abuse, the group recommends that they choose the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) and/or Road to Recovery International. | Mixa moves back into bishop's palace - Monday, June 14, 2010 6-14-10 Diocesan aides and other German Catholic bishops engineered Bishop Walter Mixa's resignation in April after he took two weeks to grudgingly admit he had slapped teenagers and mis-spent orphanage funds three decades ago. Augsburg Diocese sources voiced outrage at the return of the conservative bishop whose career has been marked his assertive tone. | The hidden wealth of the Catholic Church - Monday, June 14, 2010 6-14-10 More than €40 million have gone missing in the Diocese of Magdeburg in eastern Germany, €5 million have disappeared in Limburg near Frankfurt, and it was recently discovered that a senior priest in the Diocese of Münster had 30 secret bank accounts. And while parishes throughout Germany are cutting jobs and funds for community work, many bishops are still living on the high horse. A brand-new residence? An ostentatious home for their retirement? Restoration of a Marian column to the tune of €120,000? None of these expenditures presents a problem to high-ranking church officials from Trier in the west to Passau in the southeastern corner of Bavaria, whose coffers are brimming with cash. | What happened to Ruth Kolpack? - Monday, June 14, 2010 6-14-10 Diocesan officials never said explicitly why she was fired but strongly suggested she opposed church doctrine in her role as a Catholic teacher. Kolpack said that while some of her personal views conflict with church policy — she supports gay marriage and female priests — she did not express those views while teaching. This February, Kolpack became social service resource coordinator for Beloit Regional Hospice, a position in which she ensures that all components of the organization work together to provide holistic care. "It's a wonderful opportunity," she said. She is still a member of St. Thomas the Apostle and sings in the choir. Still, her firing remains "very painful" she said. (full story) |
