| Belgian priest rips 'silence and omissions' - Sunday, June 27, 2010 7-27-10 Fr. Rik Devillè: "The problem was [the church's commission's] connection with the Archdiocese, and the absence of either a lay component internally or a connection with the civil authorities. I always hoped that a truly independent commission would be formed, an organism whose objective was to help justice take its course. That must be the way. It’s not up to the church to decide who violated the law and who should be punished....The bishops have a long history over their shoulders of silence and omissions. They protect the guilty, and not the victims." (full story) |
| Pope stresses church's 'autonomy' - Sunday, June 27, 2010 6-27-10 In an exceedingly rare personal message and rebuke of a sovereign country, the pontiff stressed the church’s “autonomy” to conduct its own investigations and criticized the “lamentable methods” of Belgian police who last week detained bishops, confiscated files and even drilled into the tombs of at least one cardinal in the Brussels cathedral in a search for documents. | Pope is shocked that laws apply to priests - Sunday, June 27, 2010 6-27-10 The Vatican was very upset that some priests were treated like actual people, and were subjected to searches in a criminal investigation involving their colleagues. And today, Pope Benedict sent a message to Brussels Archbishop Andre Joseph Leonard expressing his dismay at the "deplorable methods" used in carrying out Belgian law. (full story) |

| Abuse loosens culture of silence in Italy - Sunday, June 27, 2010 6-26-10 In Italy, the “ombra del cupolone,” or shadow of the dome of St. Peter’s, reaches far, and the church has long maintained a forceful grip on public life, if not in Italians’ private lives. But slowly, the sexual abuse crisis that has stirred up Europe in recent months has begun to take root in the Vatican's backyard. While Italy still falls short on transparency in both state and church, observers say a new chapter may be beginning in which the once taboo topic of sexual abuse by priests is slowly entering the national conversation. | Peter's Pence Initiative - Saturday, June 26, 2010 The Pope's response to the clergy sex abuse and cover up scandal has been woefully inadequate, lacks a sense of urgency, is long on words and symbols, and has been void of substantive actions. In brief, the Pope's response has been unacceptable. The Peter's Pence collection on June 27 provides Catholics a unique opportunity to cast a NO vote of confidence in the Pope because of his unacceptable performance in addressing forcefully and effectively the ongoing clergy sex abuse and cover up scandal, in supporting adequately survivors of abuse, and in protecting our children. | Coordinated effort to protect assets from victims - Saturday, June 26, 2010 6-24-10 Wealthy U.S. Dioceses from California to Delaware have claimed to be broke and have filed for bankruptcy to avoid paying damages; Bishops have exploited arcane corporate laws to shield church assets from liability; and, in San Diego, parish priests have been caught literally hiding money in safes, according to court records. "If you or I did what the Diocese of San Diego did in that bankruptcy, we'd be charged with bankruptcy fraud, and we'd probably be in prison," said attorney John Manly, who has represented dozens of priest abuse victims in lawsuits across the country. | SNAP's Isely meets European victims - Saturday, June 26, 2010 6-25-10 “The survivors and advocates we met with and joined in Europe were unforgettable. They form with us a single voice of struggle and justice. All of these ancient European capitals are beautiful and majestic. What difference does it make? It is the same pain and anguish, the same sorrow, whether in Berlin or Boise, the same continuous and unbroken chain of trauma, memory and witness. One can only conclude from so many brave souls what Camus did in the final line of his post war epic, The Plague, a book many of us read college (I hope still do) …that what one learns in times of plague is “…that there is more to admire in men than to despise.” (full story) |
| Bishop to bishops: 'meet with victims' - Saturday, June 26, 2010 6-24-10 Listening to sexual abuse victims can be an “opportunity to recalibrate” the whole of a bishop’s ministry, Bishop Blase Cupich of Rapid City said today, because it’s a powerful reminder that “there are voices out there which the leadership doesn’t usually hear.” Cupich spoke as part of panel on lessons learned from the U.S. sexual abuse crisis sponsored by the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management, which is holding its annual meeting June 23-25 in Philadelphia. The Vatican has summoned the Belgian ambassador to the Holy See to convey its anger. (full story) |
