| Report on bankrupt dioceses hiding assets - Thursday, July 01, 2010 7-1-10 You heard all this stuff about, “This is a financial disaster, and we’re gonna have to close schools, parishes, soup kitchens– you know, people are gonna be on the street.” They settled the cases, and none of that happened. And what that’s illustrative of is they’re just not tellin’ the truth. This is an institution that is so cash heavy, and has so much money; you couldn’t really bankrupt them if you wanted to. This is about minimizing exposure, and controlling information, nothing else. (full story) |
| Focused on the mission - Thursday, July 01, 2010 7-1-10 The incoming Catholic bishop of Spokane is undaunted by the challenges of leading a cash-strapped church in the aftermath of bankruptcy brought on by the clergy sex abuse crisis. Bishop Blase J. Cupich, 61, said “The important thing is mission, not money. If you get mission right, money follows.” (full story) |

Jan Hertogen, a 63-year-old sociologist, said he told his story to the panel on the condition it would not be passed to authorities. He said the police raids - which also targeted a Catholic cathedral, church offices and a crypt - were an invasion of his privacy. (full story) |
| Is church's future tied to bishops? - Wednesday, June 30, 2010 6-29-10 The pallium ceremony is a case in point of the growing disconnect between people and leadership. It is a ceremony that highlights the connection between pope and bishops. But where is the laity invested in this ceremony? The inference one must draw is that authority immediately and automatically comes from the office itself, even though no one under that authority has a clue as to who made the selections and why. The men involved may be perfectly qualified, but who knows? And how would we know? (full story) |
| 2 more men claim abuse by St. Paul priest - Wednesday, June 30, 2010 6-29-10 Two more men alleging that they were sexually abused by a Twin Cities priest filed suits against the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis Tuesday, claiming that the church endangered them by concealing reports about the priest's behavior. All four suits concern the Rev. Thomas Stitts and charge that the archdiocese knew of abuse complaints against him in the late 1960s and early '70s but did nothing to prevent further violations. Stitts died in 1985. (full story) |
| Vatican: an 'incorrect interpretation' - Wednesday, June 30, 2010 6-30-10 Holy See Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J. provided the following clarification: The reference to financial activities for which - as the note affirmed - there may also have been 'errors of judgement' is to be considered as a general observation, and not as referring to any particular administration. As regards Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, archbishop of Naples, Italy, who led the congregation from 2001 to 2006, we reiterate 'respect and solidarity', in the certainty that his correct conduct may lead to a complete and rapid clarification of the judicial proceedings. | Pooled investments part of assets - Tuesday, June 29, 2010 6-28-10 A Delaware bankruptcy judge says creditors in the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington's bankruptcy can try to lay claim to assets of certain parishes held by the diocese. The judge said funds held in trust by the diocese on behalf of the parishes are commingled with the diocese's own non-trust funds and unable to be traced. The ruling means the diocese's creditors committee, consisting of alleged survivors of priest sex abuse, can go after the entire $120 million in the pooled account, not just the diocese's $45 million.
