| Pope's visit to cost taxpayers 12m pounds - Tuesday, July 06, 2010 7-6-10 Costs for the pope's inaugural visit to Britain are soaring, with taxpayers contributing as much as £12m towards the four-day event, an increase of £4m on previous estimates. Lord Patten of Barnes, David Cameron's special representative for the papal visit, said at a Foreign Office briefing today that the government had revised its initial contribution because of a failure to grasp the "complexity and sophistication" of the trip. | Boston adopts new finance model - Tuesday, July 06, 2010 7-6-10 The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, moving to stabilize its finances and replace an old-fashioned patchwork of parish taxes and fees, is rolling out a new financial model in which all parishes will be expected to contribute 18 percent of their weekly offertory, “grand annual’’ fund-raising drive, and net rental income to the archdiocese’s central ministries. | The Vatican closes ranks - Tuesday, July 06, 2010 7-6-10 It was June 24 and the Belgian Bishops' Conference was convening at the palace. Item 5 on the agenda was a contentious issue: what to do with old files on Belgian priests who have sinned against children. It was these files that had attracted the interest of Belgian investigators. Law enforcement officials received a tip from a retired priest who says that for years he has been providing his church superiors with secret files that prove that priests have been sexually molesting minors. So far, though, says the former clergyman, his information has not been acted upon. (full story) |
Before re-evangelizing the West - Monday, July 05, 2010 7-1-10 I can appreciate Pope Benedict's remarks that God is being “eclipsed” by secularism in developed nations and there is a need to “re-evangelize” the West. The Pope’s new church department, the Pontifical Council for New Evangelization, is similar to ones tried by the Anglicans and Baptists. Who knows, it might work. But here’s a tip from a non-Catholic who nonetheless wants Roman Catholicism to survive and thrive: Clean up your own backyard first, your Holiness. (full story)
The NYT and church law - a canonist responds - Monday, July 05, 2010 7-5-10 It is rare when issues of canon law make the front page of the New York Times and even more rare when the secular media gets their canonical issues right. But the Times story of July 2, 2010, “Church Office Failed to Act on Abuse Scandal,” did just that. As the Times reported, it truly was a failure in the church’s canon-law system that exacerbated, if it did not help to cause, the clergy child sex-abuse crisis in the United States. (full story)
Brady leaves bishop to talk about abuse - Monday, July 05, 2010 7-5-10 Catholic all-Ireland Primate Sean Brady left it to a bishop to talk about the issue of child sex abuse at a special mass to celebrate St Oliver Plunkett's Day. (full story)
When Irish eyes are crying - Monday, July 05, 2010 7-5-10 In the editorials, newspaper columns and university common rooms and on the phone-in programs and television panels – and, perhaps most tellingly, in the pubs – the consensus remains unaltered: Cardinal Brady must go! This has no comparable parallel in Irish history, although there are several contemporary parallels: the disgraced Hans Hermann Groer of Vienna and the obstinate Bernard Law of Boston. (full story)
VOTF Chapter launches website - Sunday, July 04, 2010 7-3-10 Two weeks ago, the Voice of the Faithful of Central Washington launched a website designed to be "a resource for those interested in protecting children and vulnerable adults in our church." The Voice of the Faithful said it believes the church has not been forthcoming about allegations of sex abuse by clerics here. "There's a pattern of misinformation," said spokesman Robert Fontana. "The approach of protecting clergy hasn't changed." (full story)
Apology is 'just words' - Sunday, July 04, 2010 7-5-10 Australian Archbishop Hart delivered a "sincere and unreserved" apology to victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy yesterday. But Forgotten Australians Action Group spokesperson Louise Goode said: "It's farcical if it isn't followed by the action of atonement, which needs to be expressed in a financial way. The apology must come with redress and compensation" - and not just for sexual abuse victims, she said. "They're saying if you were sexually abused, you're more deserving than someone who has had severe psychological abuse or severe emotional neglect," Ms Goode said. (full story)
Dioceses oust abusers they pledged to monitor - Sunday, July 04, 2010 7-4-10 Bishops barred those clerics from functioning as priests and promised to keep watch over them in supervisory programs that would keep the men far from children. But interviews with canon lawyers, church child protection officials and experts who advise them found that, eight years after the plan was approved, few of those diocesan programs exist. Church leaders are more likely to oust a cleric from the priesthood than monitor him. (full story)
