Nov. 2007 U.S. Bishops Elections - Friday, November 16, 2007
11-16-07 I must advise you that we and other informed Catholic laity are again disappointed and dismayed that the bishops have elected Cardinal George of Chicago to lead the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, with Bishop Kicanas as Vice-President. The choice of the Cardinal seems to us nothing less than a spiteful slap on the face of the thousands of victims of sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic clergy and of us who have labored long on survivors' behalf and who counseled against electing him. VOTF-Atlanta Letter to Archbishop Gregory - Sunday, March 20, 2005

February 8, 2005

Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory

680 West Peachtree Street, NW

Atlanta, Georgia 30308

Dear Archbishop Gregory,

Understanding that you are no doubt very busy these days, but not having heard from you since our letter to Belleville a month ago, I thought it might be wise to write again.

As we wrote in the first letter, the members of Voice of the Faithful-Atlanta wish to join with all the other voices congratulating you on your elevation to Archbishop of Atlanta.  It is with joy and hope that we welcome you to north Georgia.  Your arrival marks a “clean slate”, a long-awaited opportunity for Atlanta’s Catholics to begin anew.

Atlanta is the growing and vibrant capital city of the New South.  You have been blessed with the opportunity to create here a “new Jerusalem, a city shining on a hill.”  We reiterate that the members of VOTF-Atlanta stand ready to help in any way we can.

VOTF-Atlanta has very limited goals: to support victims of abuse, to support our many exemplary priests, and to avert further scandals through structural/cultural change.  We have no other agenda.

We are anxious to greet you personally and to discuss these goals in the context of the Archdiocese.  Will you kindly advise me when you can meet us at your earliest convenience.

Again, our warmest welcome to our Archdiocese and city.  May your administration be marked by the Christ-like love, openness, and care for all people, especially the poor, for which you are known.

For the members of VOTF-Atlanta, your brother in our servant Savior,

John Dearie

Chair
